Calibre’s Whitewater Team increased flood resilience at Bohn Park, while preserving crucial aquatic habitats.

Bohn Park suffered extensive damage from the 2013 Colorado Flood, which caused record rainfall to overflow the North St. Vrain Creek. Calibre’s Whitewater Team was selected to redesign the park and restore the creek, focusing on enhancing flood capacity and mitigating future flood events. The project included complex modeling, overflow channels, creek stabilization, and habitat structures.

The team designed cross-vane structures and created pools and riffles to address the steep 3% creek slope while maintaining a natural appearance. The design also incorporated deep pools, wetland areas, and strategically placed boulders to support aquatic habitats year-round. Additionally, balancing recreational access and preserving the riparian habitat was vital, as the park attracts 200 to 400 visitors each weekend. Hardened river access points were strategically placed for fishing and recreation, allowing the natural habitat to remain undisturbed.
