When you get caught in the day to day grind at work, it is so easy to forget the importance of the little things. One of those little things is saying thank you.
Thank you should be part of everyone’s vernacular, no matter how small the task or gesture because the truth is, as humans we need to hear thank you, it’s part of being an emotion-based species. Several articles discuss this, but one article in Forbes talks about the importance of writing Thank You Notes. It says that even months after a person writes a thank you note, their brain is “still wired to feel extra thankful.” It goes on to say that saying thank you has a “self-perpetuating nature: The more you practice gratitude, the more attuned you are to it and the more you can enjoy its psychological benefits. These psychological benefits include a feeling of well-being and reduced depression.” In short, say thank you because it is good for your mental health.
Another article in HuffPost also talks about the benefits of saying thank you, one being improvement of self-esteem. When you are grateful and thankful, you are more likely to take on new challenges and are more optimistic about achieving your goals. Another interesting point that this article discusses is being grateful even for the challenges that happen. Recognizing those challenges and set- backs teaches us lessons and helps us learn for future successes.
