As part of our 2024 Leadership Forum series, Calibre recently co-hosted a panel discussion with JVA, Inc. about supporting LGBTQ+ individuals in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. We assembled a panel of experts to speak on LGBTQ+ inclusion and diversity within the sector, including Rick Zani with Mortenson, Mary Powell and Jennifer Winters with Mile High Flood District, and Neil Stewart with Stantec. Here are some key takeaways from their conversation:

Supporting LGBTQ+ Individuals
The panel emphasized the need to establish robust support mechanisms within the industry and promote allyship to create a welcoming workplace culture for LGBTQ+ colleagues. Companies must recognize the support needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and address discriminatory behavior. Additionally, advocating for inclusive policies can help create an equitable workplace environment.

Leadership Progression and Soft Skills Development
Rethinking traditional leadership promotion metrics to empower LGBTQ+ professionals is essential. The industry should focus on inclusive leadership practices and revised hiring standards to ensure everyone has equal growth and advancement opportunities.

Visibility and Representation
It’s important to showcase diversity and increase the representation of LGBTQ+ individuals in the workplace. Promoting greater visibility and inclusivity can help create a supportive environment for all employees.

Continuous Learning and Adaptation
Embracing a growth mindset and prioritizing ongoing education on LGBTQ+ issues is crucial. Fostering a culture of inclusivity and belonging through continuous learning and adaptation can lead to a more supportive and respectful workplace environment.

Strategies for Implementation
We should concentrate on developing inclusive leadership practices for LGBTQ+ professionals. It is also crucial to promote allyship, visibility, and representation of LGBTQ+ individuals in the workplace. Providing valuable resources, mentorship opportunities, and inclusive healthcare benefits can further support these efforts. Creating a culture of respect, inclusivity, and support through open communication and feedback is vital to fostering a welcoming environment for all employees.

The discussion on LGBTQ+ inclusion and diversity in the AEC industry emphasized the critical need for proactive measures to create a more inclusive, equitable, and supportive workplace environment. By championing diversity, fostering inclusivity, and advocating for meaningful change, industry professionals can work together to build a more diverse and welcoming industry for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. We can pave the way for a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive future through continuous learning, adaptation, and a commitment to creating a culture of respect and inclusion.

Let’s embrace diversity, inclusion, and equality in the AEC industry and beyond, creating a vibrant and inclusive community where all individuals can succeed and flourish.
