Causes of Concrete and Asphalt Deterioration Explained

Source: Hokkaido University

Cement and asphalt are essential when it comes to the construction of buildings and roads throughout the world. Recently though, a team of scientists from six different institutions have revealed through their research that trace quantities of organic matter in modern concrete structures and asphalt pavements are causing faster deterioration of the structures. The organic matter that was found consisted of phthalates, diesel exhaust particulates, surfactants, and windshield washer fluids, which contribute to rapid deterioration. With this information, scientists are developing novel formulations for longer-lasting concrete structures and asphalt pavements.
